ITW : Ambit - Dubstep producer visits France for the release of her EP on Bait

mana

On the 27th of February, Bait label, founded by Beatrice M., will organise Ambit's release party of EP "In The Dark" at Le Point Ephémère. A friendly gathering that aims to celebrate technoid dubstep that is slowly making its place in France. For this occasion, we spoke with dublin-based producer Ambit about abyssal creations and her first steps in this dubby universe.

mana: From Paris to Dublin. How do you feel about the new bridges being made, especially in terms of musical discovery?

Ambit: I am feeling very positive about it. I have not expected to be working with an international label at such an early stage of my production journey. Feeling very grateful to Beatrice for reaching out to me, it’s great to hear other artists to share the same passion and style or elements of it. I believe it’s very motivating when someone so talented, like Beatrice M. believes in your skills to deliver tracks for a release.

With an external outlook, why do you feel dubstep and drum & bass haven’t really been given a chance until now in France?

I don’t know much about the underground music scene in France, in fact I have only been to Paris once when I was very young.

My musical inspiration has always come from the underground music scene in the UK and in the recent years for dubstep also from the Netherlands/Belgium where they have some unreal producers, 11th Hour would be my top inspiration from there.

However, having travelled around Europe I believe that there are not many countries in Europe where dubstep and drum & bass are as big as the UK. It appears that it is always a very small scene compared to genres like Techno/House etc.

So it doesn’t surprise me that France hasn’t been any different until now.

What brought you to d&b. Can you recollect your first memories?

I have loved DnB/Jungle for as long as I can remember. I had a bit of an encounter with it back in Poland in the mid 2000s but my real passion for this genre started when I was spending one summer in Manchester, UK.

My first proper experience of DnB was in this dingy nightclub in Manchester. When I heard Drum and Bass play on the big proper soundsystem it sounded like nothing I had ever heard before, no electronic music attracted my ear to this level before. What I remember most about the tracks were these big fat snares & insanely deep basslines and delayed female vocals! Absolutely loved them.

It is such a versatile genre, with so many influences, every subgenre has something special about it, I love it. The way you can dance to DnB/Jungle is different to anything else.

You are coming to Paris for an event organised by Bait for the release of your EP “In the Dark”. Can you tell us more about how this collaboration saw life?

In the summer 2022 I had my first debut release on the Woozy WZY2.5 compilation run by Ema, with the track entitled ‘Act of Goodness’. The whole album was very well received and so was the track. Back in April  last year I believe, Beatrice M. contacted me to say that they really loved my track and style and that they would love me to make tunes for her label. And that’s how it happened…😊

Can you also talk about the motives behind the creation of this project?

When making the tune Run I didn’t have any label in mind, I just wanted to make a tune that is dark and has a bit of an old skool vibe like DMZ releases. Not sure how well it worked out but that was the idea. I sent the tune to Bea and they said they would like to release it if with another tune. So I felt motivated to make another tune which is called ‘In the Dark’. Then Bea involved a very talented producer Argo to do the remix which is great.

Do you have a particular attraction to the abyss?

I have always been interested in understanding human behaviour, reading about the darker side of the psyche, Carl Jung’s shadow and I love deep philosophical conversations.

My inspiration for producing a lot of times comes from movies. I love deep movies with memorable quotes and those that have left some sort of impact on me.

I don’t always play deep/dark tunes but I definitely am attracted to the deeper and darker side of the underground music.

What BPM will you never fall below, and why?

I will stick to anything between 140 and 175 bpm, at least for now when I am learning the ropes. There is so much to learn, I believe once I feel I have reached a certain level in my music production, I would be open to trying something else.
